Biography of Troy M. Smith, CFP®
Troy has been an independent financial planner since 1989. Troy was Managing Member/Partner of Lewis Financial Management LLC, a federally Registered Investment Adviser in Raleigh, North Carolina from 2001 to 2003. Troy was also President of Tax-Deferred Retirement Planners, Inc., Pinehurst, North Carolina, a firm he founded in 1990 and managed until 2003. Troy moved to Pinehurst from Glendale, California in 1990 where he worked as a Manager and Registered Representative at Gene Morgan Financial. Gene Morgan is known for his television show: Charting the Market with Gene Morgan that ran for over two decades. Before that, Troy worked as a consultant to the financial services industry. Troy began his financial career as a Sales Assistant at EF Hutton in 1982.
Competence
Troy is an active member of the Financial Planning Association and was nominated for the association's national Board of Directors. Troy is also a member of the Financial Planning Association of the Triangle, expert in Charitable Trusts and Charitable Planning and member of the National Committee on Planned Giving (NCPG) and the North Carolina Planned Giving Council (NCPGC). Troy is NASD General Securities Licensed, Series 7 exam (1989), NASD Series 63 (1990), NASD Series 65 (1991). Life Insurance Licensed (1991) in North Carolina and other states: CA, CO, NV, OH, SC, TX, UT appointed with over 30 insurance companies and also licensed for Long-Term Care Insurance. He has appeared several times on television and radio and is regularly quoted in local and national publications.
Education
Troy has two degrees from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. He did his Certified Financial Planner™ course work at the American College, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. He has been an Adjunct Professor in the Executive Certificate for Financial Planning program, Income Tax Section, at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina.
